Invisalign is a modern treatment for crooked and misaligned teeth. Most people have seen a commercial on television, an add in a magazine, or information on the internet about Invisalign. Many of our patients tend to be curious about it and they ask different questions that we intend to answer through this blog. What is it exactly and how does it work? What patients are considered good candidates for it? What are the differences between Invisalign and traditional metal braces? What are the benefits of going through Invisalign treatment? And, how can our office help you reach your goal of a perfect smile through Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that improves the alignment of teeth. Invisalign straightens your teeth by using a series of clear aligners that are custom fit to your mouth. The number of aligners that a patient receives depends on the severity of misalignment and the goals of treatment. The length of treatment can be as short as 10 weeks and as long as 3 years. Each set of trays are to be worn 22 hours a day for 2 weeks. We only recommend for patients to remove their trays while eating, drinking anything other than water, brushing, and flossing. Compliance is the most important determining factor in how successful the treatment is.

Many of our patients are concerned about being a suitable candidate for Invisalign treatment. The majority of our patients are considered good candidates for Invisalign and the Invisalign website actually provides an assessment that will tell you whether or not you are a good candidate. The link is: www.invisalign.com/smile-assessment. Invisalign can treat most forms of malocclusion and can be very beneficial to many patients.

One of the most common questions that our patients ask is about the difference in Invisalign and traditional braces. Invisalign provides a way to straighten your teeth without wires and brackets. Almost no one will know you are wearing them unless you tell them. While traditional metal braces involve wires, bands, and brackets, Invisalign is a virtually invisible solution. Invisalign is also removable allowing patients to remove the aligners when eating (with no food restrictions), drinking, and performing oral hygiene care. Traditional braces are permanent during treatment, which can hinder proper oral care and eating certain foods.

There are many benefits to having Invisalign treatment. One of the most important benefits of having straighter teeth is having healthier gums. When a patient's teeth are properly aligned, they are much easier to brush and floss than crowded, crooked, or spaced teeth. This will decrease a patient's chances of having gum disease. Gum disease is linked to many health issues including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, respiratory disease, preterm labor, low weight babies, and osteoporosis. With straight teeth, a patient decreases their risk of having these health issues. Another benefit of Invisalign treatment is easier cleanings. If a patient's teeth are straight, the chances of having increased plaque accumulation, cavities, and gum disease are greatly decreased. Having properly aligned teeth also allows a patient to have a decreased risk of abnormal wear. When a patient's teeth are out of alignment, they are more likely to clench and grind their teeth, resulting in abnormal wear and possible TMJ issues. Having a confident and pretty smile is also a huge benefit of Invisalign. Many of our patients are so pleased with the results they received from going through Invisalign treatment and say that they are more confident and smile without reservations now.
